MISSION SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Support the students at 15th Street School

Help tutor and read to children.  For over 15 years volunteers at St. Peter's have donated their time working in classrooms at this school located at 15th and Mesa Street in San Pedro.  We also provide each child at the school a book at Christmastime. Each spring we read books by Dr. Seuss in each class for National Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss Day). Contact Joanie Gale at joaniekgale@gmail.com or 310.877.1957.

 Quilter’s Plus

Come sew simple quilts to give to new parents of preemie's in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Harbor UCLA Hospital. The quilts are placed over the top of the newborn’s bed or isolette to block the light from the baby. The quilts also help to brighten the NICU, making it a bit more cheery and more like home.  When the newborn is discharged, the quilt will go home with him or her.  Bring a sack lunch, your portable sewing machine and enjoy the fellowship of other quilters/sewers. Laundry Love Outreach

St. Peter’s has committed to serving on the first and third Wednesday of each month. A group of 5-7 volunteers from St. Peter’s usually carpool (due to limited parking) to the Laundromat on the corner of 1st and Bandini Street in San Pedro (when you drive by you will see the Laundry Love banner outside). We normally arrive around 6 PM. Some days there is a line of people waiting for us. We always start with a prayer - standing in a circle with the people we are going to serve. Then the work begins

First – Laundry. Our brothers and sisters come from a variety of backgrounds – homeless, poor, in recovery, all ages ..but they all want to have clean clothes, sheets, towels and blankets...just like us. We provide money and soap, they provide dirty clothes. We fill the washers and dryers with coins, they put in their clothes. Second – Love (the best part of the evening). While the clothes are washing or drying...we have an opportunity to talk about...well whatever our brothers or sisters want to talk about. You do not have to go every month ...but we will warn you, after a couple months you will be hooked and want to make time every month. We would love to have you join us ...please contact Alex Perez at 310.505.8483 or Tamera Johnson at educateteaj@gmail.com or 818.415.8552
