We are a Matthew 25 Church! What does that mean?

Our congregation has accepted the PC(USA)’s invitation to follow Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 25:31–46 by becoming active disciples and making a difference in our community and the world. As part of our Matthew 25 commitment, we pledge to embrace one or more of these three areas of focus: • Building congregational vitality by deepening and energizing our faith and growing as joyful leaders and disciples actively engaged with our community as we share the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed • Dismantling structural racism by fearlessly applying our faith to advocate and break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color • Eradicating systemic poverty by acting on our beliefs and working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor

Upcoming Opportunities!

15th Street School Volunteers

St. Peter’s has supported the 15th St. School Elementary School in San Pedro for decades. We’ve contributed financially, arranged for Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus to visit, rewarded outstanding graduates, celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and volunteered in classrooms.

All interested individuals are welcome. Helping in a classroom on an ongoing basis has been very rewarding to volunteers and appreciated by teachers. If you would like to be part of this effort, please note the following

  • At this time students are encouraged but not required to be vaccinated, and generally will not be wearing masks. This may change on the numbers and the guidelines.

  • Volunteers may request a grade; help in the 2nd-5th grades is needed. The teacher will direct the volunteer, be it working one-on-one, small groups, reading to a class or whatever works best in that classroom. Some classes are upstairs, please indicate if one requires a ground floor classroom.

  • Commitment is typically 1-2 mornings or afternoons a week.

  • Parking may be available in the school lot. Street parking is challenging on Monday and Tuesday mornings due to street cleaning.

The “one day” volunteer efforts such as reading Dr. Seuss books and the Christmas visit require only that you show up with a completed form. To make a commitment as a classroom volunteer, one must register with the LAUSD and have a current TB test.

Laundry Love

Contact Alex Perez at 310-505-8483 or Tamara Johnson at 818-415-8552.

The Laundry Love initiative consists of regular opportunities to come alongside people who are struggling financially by assisting them with their laundry. Laundry love partners with groups and local laundromats to offer supplies and quarters to low-income or no-income families and individuals to clean their clothes.

St. Peter’s continues its commitment to Laundry Love on the third Wednesday of each month in San Pedro by provided a simple meal and quarters for those who show up to wash their clothes. Due to ongoing Covid concerns, spending the evening helping and interacting with the people there is not happening for now, but we do need people to help with making the sandwiches and also delivering the food, water and quarters.

Sign up to commit to taking on a month in 2023. It is easy and straightforward and all instructions on what to do will be provided. This is a great opportunity for an activity to do as a family or group, a small group Bible Study or another group that you are a part of.

Garden Church

We have the opportunity to not only provide food but also sit and have food and fellowship with the Garden Church.

Our church is continuing providing 40 meals to the un-housed and food insecure community of the Garden Church in San Pedro on the second Sunday of every month. Please sign up to bring some part of the meal and join with your faith community to make hot meal plates and to-go food bags at 4:00 pm in the St. Peter’s church kitchen. We will plate the food and take it to San Pedro. You are welcome to come deliver the food but we are just grateful for your help.
